Most people are drawn to Pembrokeshire by the magnificent coast line and countryside. However there are other attractions in the county, some, others not so, well known. The following list is not comprehensive, but will give you a taste of what Pembrokeshire has to offer all within about an hour's drive of Avon House.

The Fishguard Tapestry ( www.fishguardonline.com) is located in the town hall, 300 yards away form Avon House. It is a stunning piece of tapestry chronicling the invasion of the French in 19797.

Attractions for youngsters and the family.

Oakwood Theme Park (www.oakwoodthemepark.co.uk) has about 20 different rides, varying from the gentle to the downright scary! The park is located about 8 miles east of Haverfordwest. From Avon House, the journey should take no more than 45 minutes.

Folly Farm (www.folly-farm.co.uk) offers something for all ages; pets' corner, adventure playgrounds, farm and more exotic animals, and a funfair are all here. The farm is located south of Narberth, and takes about 45 minutes to reach from Avon House.

Clerkenhill Adventure Farm (www.clerkenhilladventurefarm.co.uk) would probably suit junior and young secondary age children, as it has a great range of climbing and scrambling equipment! There are also some go carts and pedal vehicles, and a spooky wood. The farm is located a few miles east of Haverfordwest, about 30 minutes drive from Avon House.

Castell Henllys (www.castellhenllys.com) is a fascinating place to visit. An Iron Age archaeological site has been excavated, and several round houses built using the "footprints" of original dwellings. You will find Castell Henllys off the main cost road between Newport and Cardigan, and is less than 40 minutes drive away from Avon House.

Castles.

Pembroke castle (www.pembroke-castle.co.uk) is owned by an independent trust. Being the birth place of Henry Tudor, Henry VII, it is of great historical interest. Pembroke is about an hour's drive from Avon House, but it is well worth the trip to see the castle and perhaps of of the beautiful beaches in the southern part of the county.

Manorbier castle (www.castlewales.com/manor.html) is well off the beaten track, and a unique castle. As with Pembroke, it is about an hour's drive away from Avon House, but after visiting the castle, the beach at Manorbier is well worth a visit. The rocks have a definite red tinge to them, and the bay is well sheltered.

Carew Castle and Tidal Mill (www.carewcastle.com) is an extremely peaceful place. It is located about 5 miles east of Pembroke, about an hour's drive from Avon House. After a visit to the castle, a trip to Tenby would complete and enjoyable day out!

Other places of interest.

St Davids Cathedral (www.stdavidscathedral.org.uk) – no visit to Pembrokeshire would be complete without a visit to this unique building. It is full of history, and its architecture is magnificent. Recent renovations include restoring the cloisters and refectory, so you can enjoy some local produce after wandering around the cathedral building!
Next to it is the Bishop's Palace (www.castlewales.com/sdbishop.html), owned by Cadw, which itself has undergone some restoration in recent years. These are on the A478 coast road, about 30 minutes drive from Avon House

Picton Castle (www.pictoncastle.co.uk) was built about 850 years ago. The grounds are extensive, and range from a walled garden to rolling vistas. It is well worth taking a tour round the castle itself. Picton Castle is 2 miles south off the A40, just past Haverfordwest about 30 minutes drive away from Avon House.

Scolton Manor ( www.pembrokeshirevirtualmuseum.co.uk/home.html) can be found off the A40 before Haverfordwest when travelling from Avon House.
